Victoria Falls cruises operate every day of the year, but the experience changes significantly depending on when you visit. Water levels, wildlife concentration, light quality, and crowd size all shift across the calendar in ways that are worth understanding before you book. The Two Seasons at a Glance

The Zambezi River follows a predictable seasonal cycle. The dry season runs from May through October — water levels drop steadily, the river narrows, and animals concentrate near the water’s edge. The wet season runs from November through April — the river rises dramatically, the surrounding landscape turns intensely green, and the falls produce their largest spray plume of the year.

Neither season is objectively better. They offer genuinely different experiences, and the right answer depends on what matters most to you.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

May

The transition month. Water levels from the wet season are still high in May, and the falls are at close to their peak volume — the spray plume can be so dense that you get wet standing at the main viewpoint. On the river, the higher water means animals are more spread across the floodplain. Temperatures are cooling and the days are clear. May is a good time to visit if you want dramatic falls AND a pleasant cruise.

Cruise conditions: Excellent. Comfortable temperatures (high 20s°C), clear skies, wildlife present.

June

The dry season takes hold. Water levels begin dropping, concentrating hippos and crocodiles into the main channel. The bush starts to thin and wildlife becomes easier to spot from the cruise. Temperatures drop in the evenings — a light jacket is useful after sunset. June marks the beginning of peak season, so availability on the most popular cruises can fill up on weekends.

Cruise conditions: Very good. Cooling evenings, improving wildlife sightings, book ahead for weekends.

July

Peak dry season. One of the most popular months for good reason: clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures (around 25°C), cool evenings, and concentrated wildlife along the river corridor. The falls have dropped from their May peak but are still flowing strongly. The golden-hour light on the Zambezi is exceptional for photography.

Cruise conditions: Outstanding. The single best month for wildlife and photography. Book as far ahead as possible.

August

Conditions similar to July. Temperatures rise slightly during the day, but evenings remain comfortable. Wildlife sightings are typically at their best — elephants, giraffes, and zebras are frequently seen at the water’s edge as other water sources dry up inland. Carmine bee-eaters are nesting in the river banks, adding a brilliant splash of colour to the experience.

Cruise conditions: Outstanding. Peak wildlife month. Reserve well in advance.

September

The hot season begins. Daytime temperatures climb into the low 30s°C, though the evenings cool quickly after sunset. The river is at a low point, which means exceptional wildlife concentration but also a reduced-volume falls. The cruise experience remains excellent — the wildlife is, if anything, at its most active as competition for water intensifies.

Cruise conditions: Very good to excellent. Hotter days, still ideal for wildlife and sunset views.

October

The hottest month of the year. Daytime temperatures regularly reach 38–40°C, and the Zambezi’s water level is typically at its annual low. This is the peak month for animal sightings — large elephant herds are commonly spotted at the river at dusk. The heat breaks quickly after sunset, and the cruise timing (golden hour) coincides neatly with the coolest and most beautiful part of the day.

Cruise conditions: Good for wildlife and sunsets. Start time (late afternoon) means the worst heat has passed by departure.

November

The first rains arrive. The landscape transforms quickly — within weeks the bush goes from dusty beige to vivid green. Water levels begin rising. Wildlife disperses as water becomes available across the plains. The falls start building toward their wet-season volume. Thunderstorms are dramatic and frequent, though they typically arrive in the afternoon rather than at cruise time.

Cruise conditions: Good. Fewer crowds, lower prices, lush scenery. Watch afternoon thunderstorm timing.

December and January

Full wet season. The Zambezi is rising rapidly and by January is often in full flood. The falls are at a significant volume — Victoria Falls in full flood is one of the great spectacles in Africa. Wildlife sightings on the river are less reliable, but elephant and hippo numbers remain visible. The humidity is high, but the evenings are warm and the landscape is strikingly beautiful.

Cruise conditions: Decent. The experience is more about the river and the landscape than wildlife density. Fewer crowds, lower cruise prices.

February and March

The peak of the wet season. The Zambezi carries maximum water volume, and the falls are at their most powerful — the spray can be seen from 50 km away on clear days. The river is wide and full. Hippos are present but spread across flooded channels. This is the most challenging month for wildlife spotting, but the most dramatic for the sheer scale of the water.

Cruise conditions: Moderate for wildlife; spectacular for the river itself. Best for experienced travellers who’ve seen the dry season and want a contrast.

April

Water levels begin their slow recession, but the river remains full. The rains are tailing off. The bush is still lush and green. This is an overlooked month — fewer visitors than the dry season, beautiful scenery, and conditions improving through the month.

Cruise conditions: Good and improving. Excellent value month before peak season prices return.
